Wanderlust Wednesday – Cabarita Beach

Brrrrr! This cold weather has us pining away for a warm, sunny spot alongside the ocean. We are ready to  plan our next adventure and cross another amazing destination off our bucket list. On the top of our ever growing list is Cabarita Beach in Australia, where the sun is bright and the temperatures are high.

This little paradise is perfectly located midway along Australia’s Tweed Coast just north of Byron Bay with the most pristine beaches and of course, plenty of warm sunshine! Known for its incredible surfing, Cabarita Beach is protected by an underdeveloped headland and is a laid back, seaside town. Sounds like perfection to us!

A trip to Cabarita wouldn’t be complete without a stay at the fabulous Halcyon House, one the very few hotels in the area. It is the quintessential beach hotel with blue and white decor, rattan details and some the most beautiful textiles around. Designer, Anna Spiro of Black & Spiro created the hotel to exude the feeling of a comfortable beach house perfectly outfitted with every necessity.

And we can’t forget to mention the Halcyon House pool!  Striped loungers, palm trees and quaint poolside cafe. We could spend all day here lounging with a fruity cocktail in our hands and soaking up some rays.

We can’t wait to book our trip to Cabarita Beach and enjoy the warm sunshine.  We may even try our skills at surfing. Let the packing commence!

Tonga Baskets

We are head over heels in love with the artistry of African Tonga baskets. These works of art are woven by the Tonga women of Zambia and have distinctive square bottoms which form the foundation of each basket. The baskets are traditionally used for carrying maize and to winnow the grains. Made from ilala palm leaves, it takes approximately two weeks for one tonga basket to be woven. Their simplistic patterns and color contrast make them a perfect addition to any space.

Warning… these artisan made beauties can be addictive! We have found it nearly impossible to have just one! We are on the search for inspirational ways to display our ever growing Tonga basket collection. Here are some styling ideas we are contemplating (that also justify adding more to our collection).

The symmetry of this display adds the perfect focal point between two twin beds. We definitely would feel right at home in this layered guest room.

This floor to ceiling Tonga basket collection designed by Stephen Falcke creates a show stopping display. Talk about drama!

The woven texture and asymmetry of this display is the perfect juxtaposition to the straight lines and sleek surfaces in this kitchen.  Amber Creswell hits a home run with this creative use of tonga baskets in her kitchen design.

We love how designer, Kelly Behun mixed  tonga baskets with wall hanging plants to create an organic feel in this outdoor space. What’s not to like? Texture, greenery and a beautiful spot to enjoy a cocktail.
